The Stand UP Mitzvah Club Application
The Stand UP Mitzvah Club recognizes those AZA, BBG and BBYO chapters around the world that conduct at least 36 hours of community service. Participation in direct and indirect service is necessary. Chapters must do both types of service to be eligible for entry into the Mitzvah Club.
Direct Service: Direct service activities are those that require personal contact with people in need. Examples of direct service activities include students’ working with senior citizens in an intergenerational project, volunteering in a soup kitchen or reading to small children. Direct service teaches responsibility for actions, and the immediate impact is seen or felt. ***At least 30 hours of direct service are required to be considered eligible for this award.
Indirect Service: Indirect experiences involve teens working behind the scenes or in a preparatory or support capacity for a direct service effort or initiative. These activities are centered on channeling resources to the problem rather than working directly with an individual who may need the service. Often teens do not come in contact with the people they serve. Examples of indirect service include fundraising, advocacy-based work, collecting food or toys for disadvantaged families and participating in landscaping in a community park. ***No more than 6 hours of this type of activity may be credited toward this award’s criteria.
Members of the Stand UP Mitzvah Club Award will have the press outlets in their community (Jewish and secular) receive an official press release from BBYO about their entry to the club to celebrate their achievement and receive additional publicity for their admirable contribution.
