Cheering on the yellow team

Everything has erupted at ILTC! Every single year, ILTC presents an all out Color War and this year was no exception. Last night, we all gathered together for what we thought was a normal evening program. All of a sudden, the world of Mario came to life as Bowser kidnapped Princess Peach in front of the whole ILTC body! We were all divided up into teams and started right off the bat. We immediately changed into our team colors and started a game of Find the Staff Member. We devoured Perlman trying to find every staff member. After that, an all camp capture the flag game was started. After the night we had, I was incredibly excited to see what would happen the next day.

Waking up this morning was difficult, but decked out in all Yellow, I ran to the dining hall for our first challenge. We had to sit at our tables with our hands tied to our teammates. It was actually a lot harder than it seemed. The rest of the morning was full of Water Challenges, cheer sessions, and an all out relay race. Lunch was a silent one. The team who kept quiet the most won the points. Post-lunch challenges were all sports all the time. I played dodgeball and soccer for my team, along with swimming in the wet clothing relay. We were given a chance to change, then reported to the dining hall for dinner. At dinner we presented our team banner and songs.

Our day ended with Fireworks and a dance to celebrate the Fourth of July. At the dance, it was announced that the Green team had emerged victorious. All in all, I had a ton of fun at Color Wars, although I was completely exhausted and sore when it ended.

The clock is ticking down

Yesterday, each chapter in CLTC was presented one of the five folds to base a program off of. Achim AZA #42 chose the fold of Judaism. So today, they sat down in our classroom and had a business meeting in order to plan their program. After creating a long list of brainstorming ideas they chose a topic to base their program on. Achim AZA #42 decided to create a program around the Jewish holiday of Tisha B'Av that is coming up soon. After choosing the main topic they decided to on an activity that would have groups of kids create their own temple and discuss the holiday its meaning, and origin. The program will be held on Tuesday and hopefully it will be very meaningful to everyone at CLTC.

  • Why do you love CLTC?

Like most things with me and BBYO, I love CLTC because the experience changed my life when I was a member. I went to Beber at 16, knowing no one and feeling completely disconnected from my faith. In 12 days, I was a Jew with lifelong Jewish friends. It was shocking and amazing. It's an honor to be a part of that process. Also, I get to work with my BBYO peeps like Ellen Goldstein and Sherrie Stalarow.

  • What kind of things do you teach there besides music?

At IC this year, I announced my retirement from BBYO and did my last song session. This year I am solely the Judaic Educator at all the West Virginia sessions. I'm kind of the resident rabbi. If I do it right, each participant with leave CLTC with a greater sense of their Jewish identity. While I love music, since this is my last summer I get to help train a new song leader and I'm PSYCHED!

  • What is your favorite song to teach at CLTC?

Ani V'ata.....and B'tzelem Elohim.

  • Will you be at CLTC this summer and if so, are there any secrets you can tell us about what you have planned for CLTC this summer?

I answered some of this on question 2, but as far as secrets...secrets that involve the kids and not just the staff and our summer of Wii...I'll just tell you that even the most learned rabbi, which I'm SO not, knows to look out for the well needed dance break.

  • Since this is your last summer working with CLTC, how do you plan to make it extra special for all participants?

Graduations are always special. I plan on doing what I always do: reflect openly and honestly about what's happening and how our Judaic tradition is structured to be a comfort, joy and support through all things. That, and have a kick-tushie fun time.

A CLTC Acrostic Poem

C is for creativity. At CLTC you’ll channel your inner creativity to learn how to make 5/6 Fold programs for your chapter!

L is for legendary. At CLTC you’ll learn the skills to become a chapter leader, from there you’ll grow to be a regional leader, and I-board member and then one day YOU WILL BE A LEGEND AND RULE THE WORLD. It all starts with CLTC.

T is for tantalizing. When you’ve gone to a leadership camp, you become a more tantalizing candidate. Whether it be for BBYO or future job applications, a leadership training conference makes YOU the best Candidate

C is for CATASTROPHIC. If you don’t go, it will be a catastrophe, because then your chapter will have no leaders, and what will they do without leaders! So you see, you really have to go!

Shakespeare for CLTC

The great poet decided to help endorse CLTC by remaking one of his old poems. Check out Shakespeare’s endorsement of CLTC Here:

Shall I compare thee to a day at CLTC?

Thou art filled with leadership and fun:

Wind of change shall come upon thee,

And thou shalt enjoy summer’s Sun:

CLTC shall light the fire beneath each youth,

And teach them the skills to lead a chapter;

You will learn and have fun, tis the truth

And thy skills will be useful forever after.

Just twelve days shall not be enough,

Thou will want more of this leadership

Saying goodbye to all thy CLTC friends will be rough

But in your chapter thou shalt be ready to take the next step.

But all the friendships you made in the summer shade,

You can be assured will not fade.
