From the Regional Staff

Shalom and welcome to the November edition of our monthly eNews, packed with highlights of what's going on throughout BBYO in the Toronto area and around the world.

Over the last several weeks, local chapters have each launched a StandUp campaign, through which teens are empowered to make a difference in causes important to them by engaging in service, advocacy and philanthropy. Chapters Chaverot & Exodus have chosen to StandUp for kids with cancer, while Chapter L'Chaim will StandUp for at-risk youth and Chapter Magen will StandUp against youth hunger. Chapter Chaverot recently held a garage sale where the girls raised over $300 for cancer research, and many more exciting initiatives are in development by all of our chapters.

Several regional programs are also in the works:

Exciting BBYO Connect Events for Grades 6-8

BBYO Connect is the BBYO experience made just for students in grades 6 to 8. At this crucial age, our programs bridge the gap between Bar/Bat Mitzvah and high school. We offer fun, meaningful and affordable experiences that will serve as a gateway to continued involvement in Jewish life.

With close to 50 kids at each event, BBYO Connect provides a positive experience where middle schoolers can get together with camp, school and synagogue friends as well as meet new friends from across the city.

If you know any students in grades 6-8 who may be interested in our programs, please send their contact information to Jessie Greenspan at jgreenspan@bbyo.ca.

Next up, BBYO Connect presents a Chanukah Bash, Sunday December 18th. Details coming soon.

BBYO Panim Institute Named One of North America’s Most Innovative Jewish Nonprofits

Seventh Annual “Slingshot” Guidebook Names 50 Most Innovative Jewish Nonprofits in North America

The BBYO Panim Institute has been named one of North America’s 50 most innovative Jewish nonprofits in Slingshot ’11-‘12, a resource guide for Jewish innovation. According to Slingshot, Panim was selected for this honor because “after last year’s merger (2009) with the powerful BBYO, the BBYO Panim Institute is in a unique position to engage a generation of Jewish teens with community service opportunities focused on social change and rooted in Jewish values.”

Slingshot is used by philanthropists, volunteers, not-for-profit executives, and program participants to identify path-finding and trailblazing organizations grappling with concerns in Jewish life such as identity, community, and tradition. Panim was chosen for the third time by a panel of 36 foundation professionals from across North America.
