The local BBYO chapter will participate in J-serve on Sunday, April 6. J-serve is a day in which Jewish teenagers from all around the world participate in helping their community, based on the Jewish values of performing mitzvot.
For the past three years, the local Binghamton BBYO chapter has been involved through beautifying the outside of the Jewish Community Center, and this year its members plan to continue the project and have invited community members of all ages to help.
“In previous years, we have planted flowers and trees, cleaned the beds and picked up trash,” said Melissa Wolff, the chapter’s shelicha, the vice president of Jewish heritage, community service and social action. This year, the teenagers plan to once again clean the outside to prepare the JCC for spring. “The Jewish Community Center has always been supportive of the BBYO chapter and the teens want to show their appreciation for everything the JCC does for them and the community,” added Wolff.
“Although the date of April 6 makes it too early to actually plant flowers, there is still a lot of clean-up that needs to happen, as well as preparing for gardening once the weather is better,” said Linda Salomons, one of the parent advisors. “We may even be able to do some outdoor painting.”
All community members will be welcome to help and participate. Those interested in joining the group should meet at the JCC at 10 am on April 6. Organizers noted that participants should wear comfortable clothes and shoes they do not mind getting dirty.
