BBYO Teens Participate in March of the Living

Twenty-five teens from BBYO’s Ohio Northern Region Ohio delegation participated in BBYO’s national delegation of the March of the Living. This two-week international experience brought teens from around the world together to bear witness to the destruction of the Holocaust in Poland and take a trip to Israel to rejoice in the Jewish homeland.

The March of the Living commemorated Yom Hashoah as the teens marched from Auschwitz concentration camp to Birkenau concentration camp. The teens also celebrated Yom Ha’atzmaut throughout the streets of Jerusalem.

“The March of the Living changed me in unthinkable ways,” said Sydney Ungar, a senior at Solon High School. “It turned something intangible, that I had only heard about in textbooks and at Hebrew school, into something real, hard and concrete.”

More than 200 teens were part of BBYO’s delegation this year. Two Holocaust survivors also traveled with the delegation for the duration of the trip.

“What stood out to me most was the diversity of delegations that came to Poland and Israel to experience the March of the Living,” said Ryan Friedman, also a senior at Solon High School. “It truly showed me how widespread the Jewish community is, yet we all have a very similar Jewish heritage we all share and unite under.”

The trip also included an opening ceremony at the Treblinka Memorial in Poland, a walking tour of the Warsaw Ghetto, a motzei Shabbat (going out of the Shabbat) event at Warsaw University, and a visit to the Western Wall in Jerusalem.
