Chicago Area Teens Train at BBYO Great Midwest Region's Youth Convention

Read this story in the Northbrook Star

On October 25-27, 100 Jewish teens from all across the Chicagoland area met up at the Perlman Retreat Center in Mukwonago, WI for BBYO Great Midwest Region’s (GMR) annual Youth Leadership Training Convention (YLTC) and first ever Leadership Training Institute (LTI). At YLTC teens created mock BBYO chapters and were assigned respective board positions to teach leadership skills and how to run a chapter effectively.

“We helped lots of new members get more involved and taught them how to take leadership roles in their chapters so that they can become more than just members. Newer members also had the opportunity to create bonds with other people in the region. It was overall a great experience and we were really successful in teaching teens how to become leaders.” – Lindsay Rabinowitz, 15, YLTC coordinator.

“YLTC was a great experience for younger BBYO members to learn how to be a leader. It was a lot of fun meeting people for the first time and gaining connections in the region.” – Jonny Liss, 14, YLTC attendee.

This year was GMR’s first annual LTI. LTI is a convention where more experienced BBYO members learn specific leadership skills. Led by GMR’s 12th regional board, some of the skills that were taught were goal setting, importance of communication, how to make effective programs and public speaking among many more.

“LTI was an amazing experience! It was moving to build this generation’s knowledge of greater leadership skills.” – Daniel Way, 17, AZA teen president.

At LTI, a special workshop speaker from Beber Camp, Jamie Hawkins, helped all the participants take the first steps towards becoming a leader in everyday situations.

“LTI taught young leaders to utilize problem solving skills to overcome roadblocks they might face, and helped them to network among other up and coming youth.” – Natty Bernstein, 16, regional VP of Judaic programming.

Teens completed 100 hours of community service at the convention; this was a great way to start building young leaders in the region.
