International Global Shabbat comes to Omaha!

By Nate Gendler

The entire community is invited to join Omaha Jewish teens in celebration of BBYO s Global Shabbat, Friday, Nov. 13, 6 - 8:30 p.m. at the JCC Auditorium.

Planned, organized, and led by local Jewish teens, the evening includes Shabbat services, led by Aleph Shliach Benjamin Brodkey. Dinner and additional programming follows.

The teens will lead a pluralistic service similar to a Jewish summer camp experience. After a pasta and salad dinner, Mid America Region Aleph Godol Jordan Saag and N'Siah Rachel Hockfeld will make brief remarks. Afterwards, what is normally a private chapter-only ceremony, will be an open celebration in which new members are inducted into the Aleph Zadik Aleph order, a truly amazing experience.

AZA and BBG Global Shabbat is a chance for teens to unite as a global Jewish community. The teens of BBYO will also be unveiling their Stand Up initiative, a community service project they have been hard at work planning for later in the year.

BBYO's Stand UP initiative empowers teens to identify a cause that inspires them, and develop their own campaign to affect positive change in their local and global community. It is a grassroots movement of Jewish teens across the globe to take action and tackle the issues and causes they care about most.

Rooted in Jewish obligation and BBYO tradition, Stand UP is a new understanding of the old practice of Tikkun Olam - repairing the world around us. By implementing their own campaigns at the local, regional and international level, teens gain invaluable experiences in the areas of community service, philanthropy, and advocacy, cultivating important skills to become contributing members of the greater Jewish community.

We hope our family, friends and supporters join us for this truly memorable night! The Omaha BBYO Council welcomes donations toward their programming and there is an admission fee for the evening (adults: $7, teens and children: $5, under 5: free). For more information and to RSVP, contact Omaha Council S'gan Nate Gendler at 402.957.0877 or nrgendler@aol.com. RSVP by Monday, Nov. 8.
