Spring Kickoff to welcome new members

It’s January, and what does that mean for South Jersey Region (SJR) BBYO? It means welcoming in our new eighth graders. As of January 1, eighth graders are now fully members of BBYO, and to kick off our 2015 spring term, SJR BBYO will be visiting Dave and Buster’s on Jan. 10. Spring Kickoff is our largest “rush event” of the year. We have created Spring Kickoff to be the perfect introduction to BBYO for any new teen, not just eighth graders, specifically because of its relaxed tone and the fun venue.
Last year was our first Spring Kickoff, and we had over 150 teens join us. First we went to the JCC to sign in and get to know one another better. Then we headed to the city for the main event of the night. As we arrived at Dave and Buster’s, everyone received their game card to play any game they wanted. The whole night was spent playing fun arcade games, talking with new people, and enjoying the night as a whole. From racing motorcycle games to “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” BBYO attendees were winning lots of tickets and prizes.
“It was a great way for me to meet new people as a prospective member,” said Trudi Fleishman of Dafna BGG. “It encouraged me to register for BBYO and meet everyone in the region.” Trudi attended Spring Kickoff last year as an eighth grader and promptly joined as a member of Dafna BBG.
This year, SJR invites all Jewish 8- 12th graders to join in the festivities for Spring Kickoff. Teens will meet at the Katz JCC, from which the buses will go directly to Dave and Buster’s. There, SJR will have its own room equipped with unlimited sodas, dinner (dairy kosher style) and a relaxed hangout space for everyone. The game cards will be loaded with unlimited games that don’t give out tickets and a set amount of ticket-giving games.
For younger teens, this is the perfect introduction to BBYO. The fun, amiable setting will ensure an amusing night full of excitement and will briefly introduce them to the constant comfortable setting that BBYO has to offer. More teens will be there to welcome the younger ones and get to know them better. After the event, all Jewish eighth graders can join BBYO. All chapters will have events in January that any eighth grader can come to as a follow-up to Spring Kickoff. SJR will also have BBYO Night on January 18 if an eighth grader doesn’t know what chapter to join yet.
2015 will begin with a bang in SJR. Spring Kickoff on Jan. 10 starts at 6:30 p.m. at the JCC; we will return to the JCC around 10:30 p.m. The cost is $40 online, and $45 at the door. This includes transportation, unlimited sodas, and all the games included.
We hope to see every eighth grader there!
