BBYO Sends Largest Teen Delegation on the March of the Living

May 29, 2008

From April 28 – May 11, 165 BBYO teens attended the March of the Living as part of not only the largest teen delegation of the program, but also the largest delegation in BBYO's history. The March of the Living is an international, educational program that brings Jewish youth from all over the world to Poland on Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, to march from Auschwitz to Birkenau, the largest concentration camp complex built during World War II, and then to Israel to observe Yom Hazikaron, Israel Memorial Day, and Yom Ha'Atzmaut, Israel Independence Day.

Whether participants were touring Treblinka or Masada; walking through concentration camps or the ancient city of Jerusalem; commemorating Holocaust victims or Israeli military heroes; or spending Shabbat with the Warsaw Jewish community or at the Kotel, every step of the way held an informative, meaningful experience for the teens.

Read What Teens Are Saying About Their Experience on March of the Living:

"I learned more during March of the Living than I ever could in any other environment; and not only about the Holocaust, but also about myself, as well as the people surrounding me. The emotions I felt when I touched the innumerable remaining shoes in Birkenau, offered a hand to hold to a person I met two days prior as we walked through a crematorium, saw groups of teens saying kaddish at the Mausoleum in Majdanek, and heard people open up during debriefings after knowing them less than a week were absolutely indescribable.." –Jill Markowitz, Fresh Meadows, NY.

"The March of the Living is not something that can be explained, because until you experience it you can't truly understand the changes or affects it will have on you. For anyone who is even remotely considering it, I say do it. You'll come away a new person with a new outlook and new friends." –Eric Langer, Columbus, OH

"My experience was unforgettable. I learned so much more than any book or movie I had ever seen." – Michael Beth, Marlboro, NJ

"At Treblinka you imagine. At Auschwitz you think. At Majdanek you realize." – David Goldsmith, Tulsa, OK

"My March of the Living experience was incredible. While marching from Aushwitz to Birkenau, walking next to thousands of people from dozens of different countries, it didn't matter where we came from. We were all there for one specific purpose, to NEVER forget." – Jill Berkowitz, Long Island, NY

"As holocaust survivors die, we become the story tellers and make sure that we will never forget." –Lindsay Migdal, Akron, OH

"It was definitely a life changing experience and I am so happy that I was part of it. I will definitely encourage every high school student I come across and rave about how fantastic it was going on this trip with BBYO." –Alex Lee, Livingston, NJ

"March of the Living was the most amazing and intense experience of my life; it truly changed me. During our time in Poland I learned so much about the history of the Jewish people and about myself. I left Israel with so much Jewish pride and with a sense of excitement for the future that was before me." --Erica Cohen, Staten Island, NY

"March of the Living was an absolutely life changing experience. It gave me a better understanding of what actually occurred during the Holocaust and the chance for me to share what I saw with others. The trip has allowed me to become closer to my Judaism and the realization that Israel is a place that you should visit and experience." --Alyssa Langenthal, East Meadow, New York

"March of the Living was an experience and journey I will never forget. In these past two weeks I have grown so much and appreciate so many things even more than before." --Michael Solomon, Brooklyn, NY

"The trip really was magnificent, and I can't stop thinking about it." – Brett Promisloff, Potomac, MD

"Not only did I have a great time, I learned so much." -- Sara Massachi, Charlotte, NC

"My experience on March of the Living was amazing; no words can describe what I saw and what we did. I learned more than I ever have about the Holocaust and some of the things I was taught, I never learned in school." --Ashley Gildenberg, Buffalo Grove, Illinois

"The March of the Living is one of the hardest yet rewarding experiences of my life. I have been able to come home and be able to teach my friends, family, and community about how the Jewish people were treated. I have come away a changed and better person." – Grace Wilson, Richmond, VA

"The March of the Living changed my life. It helped me connect to my Jewish identity. I will continue to learn about the past so I can educate the future."--Sarah Zell, Atlanta, GA

"March of the Living was truly a once in a life time experience. It has an educational component that is unmatched by other BBYO programs and it is a program that will give you definite life-experience. March of the Living opened my eyes to the truths of the Holocaust, why Israel is a home to so many Jews in the world today, and made me realize that I need to be more of an advocate for the causes I believe in."--Andi Perelman, Pittsburgh, PA

"The March is a great and intense trip. It is a life changing experience that everyone needs. You also make friends from all over the world!" -- Brad Fitzerman Dallas, TX

"The March of the Living opened my eyes and was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am so grateful that I was able to have this experience and form lifelong friendships, create unforgettable memories, and witness a part of the history of the Jewish people." Lauren Nadler, Marlboro, NJ

"This trip changed my life forever." --Samantha Frankel, Long Island, New York

"The March of the Living was unlike anything else I had ever experienced before. The unity shown between Jews from all over the world was incredible, especially considering all of the troubles that we have faced in our past - the main one being right in front of our eyes. This trip made everything I had learned about in history books into a reality, and made me realize the true importance of the statement "Never Again." I truly recommend everyone go on this trip at some point during their high school years." -Kara Hansell, Columbus, OH

"Never forget. These two words pretty much sum up the entire trip and will stay with me for the rest of my life. The experience I got having a first hand look at the holocaust in Poland and then traveling around Israel is something that people try to spend a lifetime doing." -- Evan Weinman, Livingston, New Jersey

"March of the Living was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Seeing the horrors of the Holocaust right before my eyes was something indescribable and I encourage EVERYONE to go if given the chance. I have never felt so many emotions in those two weeks than I have felt in years." --Naomi Rybeck, Rockville, Maryland
