June 10, 2010
BBYO, Inc. is proud to announce that Estee Portnoy of Bethesda, MD has been elected Chair of BBYO’s International Board of Directors. A sports executive and Jewish philanthropist, Portnoy succeeds Howard Wohl of Mill Neck, NY.
“To see Estee chairing the BBYO board is a dream come true,” said Lynn Schusterman, a former Chair whose foundation was instrumental in the development of BBYO as an independent agency in 2002. “The combination of Estee’s youth, energy and unwavering commitment to BBYO, as well as her success in business and philanthropy, leaves no doubt that she will take BBYO to new heights."
Portnoy, who was deeply involved in BBYO as a teenager in New Castle, PA, is currently Vice President of Jump.DC, a division of LiveNation Entertainment, in Washington, DC, and has been business manager for NBA legend Michael Jordan for the last fifteen years. With her husband, Elliott, whom she met in BBYO, Portnoy founded KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) USA. A non-profit, KEEN USA provides recreation and sports programs for children and young adults with disabilities.
“BBYO taught me the true value of leadership and that giving back to the community is important,” said Portnoy. “It is a real honor to succeed Howard Wohl in this position, recognizing his extraordinary accomplishments in building BBYO to a position of high importance among Jewish teens and their families. I am inspired by the BBYO community, and look forward to working with our exceptional Board and staff to grow BBYO’s reach and success.”
"Estee is the perfect example of the BBYO alumna. She has succeeded in every area of life and done so with caring, passion and determination,” said Howard Wohl. “I know that our teens will find Estee to be their best advocate and BBYO's future will be ever stronger."
Portnoy, who joined the BBYO International Board of Directors in 2006 , will begin her term on July 1, 2010 and will continue to help strengthen BBYO in its mission to reach more Jewish teens with more meaningful Jewish experiences.
“Estee’s passion, coupled with her work ethic, makes her a marvelous asset to BBYO as the organization continues to grow and innovate,” said Matthew Grossman, BBYO’s Executive Director. “BBYO is very fortunate to be the beneficiary of her time and attention. We are thrilled to have Estee as a partner in creating a stronger Jewish future.”
