As BBYO's current International Teen Presidents, we have had the pleasure of leading our peers in our mandate to improve the world and make the Jewish community even more vibrant. Being from Queens, NY and Cherry Hill, NJ and seeing the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy in our communities and to our friends, we can relate to this mandate more than usual.
As we are sure you have seen from the footage, property has been destroyed, lives have been disrupted and the recovery is slow. Nearly 100 BBYO members are currently living with their families in shelters. It is amazing to think that just a week ago they were at Chapter meetings together enjoying all that BBYO has to offer.
Many families are going to be feeling financial strain as a result of the storm's damage, and we want to ensure that BBYO continues to be a source of relief and joy.
As a result, BBYO is establishing a special scholarship fund for teens impacted by the storm. Every penny contributed will allow those who have encountered hardship as a result of the storm damage to attend Regional Conventions, International Convention and Summer Experiences.
We are asking every BBYO teen, alum, advisor and professional to make a contribution of at least $18 to this fund. Our collective action will represent the best in BBYO: a community of people that comes together no matter where they live to help each other during a time of need. This is what being a part of the Jewish people is all about and why we take such pride in serving as BBYO's International Teen Presidents.
