After a relaxing Shabbat, everyone came out today energized and ready to get stuff done. The morning began with a beautiful meditation Shacharit led by Jill, our Judaic Educator. Those teens who decided to attend were able to immerse themselves in a calming, smooth-breathing, and spiritual experience that explored our breath and the Shema. Next, the teens had the opportunity to go to sessions that discussed the responsibilities of the positions on the BBYO board. Different leadership staff, madrichim, and coordinators led the education program for each position, using their own BBYO experience as a way to provide advice and guidance. The very tasty pizza became popular instantly as the teens went through tray after tray of it. After indulging themselves in this delicacy, the chapters spent quality time discussing their plans for their fundraisers and how to incorporate multiple themes and missions into one program, such as education, Judaism, etc. What was expected to be a day with stormy rain turned into a beautiful and sunny one, where teens threw frisbees in the field, laid out on the grass, and played basketball. After dinner, all the participants discussed the impact on stereotypes, labeling, and preconceived notions about other individuals. Along the same theme, a short film titled “The Tribe,” which showed how the Jewish people are interpreted by society and by themselves, led us into multiple conversations about our own Judaism. Finally, we concluded the night with songs led by Josh and Shelby, as well as volunteers talking about their day.
