BBYO wheelchair basketball tournament a huge success

Published
On April 28, members of BBYO’s Randy Reisbord chapter hosted its seventh annual wheelchair basketball tournament. The tournament, benefiting TIRR Memorial Hermann and the Houston Hot Wheels took place at The Zone from 12-5 p.m.. The chapter began the tournament seven years ago, in honor of a member who has spina bifida, a degenerative spinal disease.

This year, Reisbord was honored by Mayor Sylvester Turner, who proclaimed April 28 as Randy Reisbord AZA Day in the city of Houston.

Playing basketball in a wheelchair is quite different to playing while standing, as dribbling, travelling and even basket height are different. Additionally, the sport is very taxing on the upper body.

12 teams were in attendance, consisting of both able-bodied and wheelchair-bound players, playing games of five-minute halves on two different courts.

Over the past few years, Reisbord has raised thousands of dollars for TIRR and the Hot Wheels. This year, the chapter hoped to raise more than $10,000. Sponsors from throughout Houston and the Jewish community reached out to support the tournament.

After a series of round-robin games and double eliminations, followed by playoff matches, the RAAP team, led by Adam Remels and Alex Rico, won the tournament.
