Wheelchair tournament to benefit Hotwheels basketball team

On Sunday, May 4, from 1-6 p.m., at the Bellaire Recreation Center, Randy Reisbord AZA will host its second annual wheelchair basketball tournament in honor of the Houston Hotwheels. Randy Reisbord AZA is a male chapter of BBYO Lonestar Region in Houston. Open to ages 11-18, tournament participants will play basketball in wheelchairs donated by the Houston Hotwheels, TIRR Memorial Hermann’s junior wheelchair basketball team, who recently took third place at the National Wheelchair Basketball Association Junior Championship.

“Proceeds from the tournament are going to be donated to the Hotwheels,” said Justin Silver, chapter advisor to Reisbord AZA. The idea of the tournament came to life when the Reisbord teens volunteered at a local wheelchair basketball tournament and saw how impactful this program was for so many of their peers. They initially were inspired by one of their chapter members who is part of the Hotwheels team. Last year’s tournament raised more than $2,000 and continues to be recognized internationally by BBYO as an outstanding service and advocacy event.

This will be Reisbord’s second tournament hosted in honor of the Hotwheels. Registration for the event will close April 27. To register a team or to make a contribution to the Hotwheels and Reisbord AZA, contact chapter treasurer Ari Rotenberg at [email protected].
