Jewish Enrichment Innovations

Details & Schedule | Scholarship

With a range of program options designed to let you explore Judaism through the lenses of history, tradition, storytelling, and pop culture, you’ll have a unique opportunity to discover your Jewish identity alongside a community of peers and educators. Stimulating topics such as coronavirus and racism, anti-Semitism, and masculinity will be explored and discussed.

Each session is 75 minutes per day over the course of four consecutive days, and programs are offered on different weeks throughout the summer. We’ve developed a flexible schedule so that session choices can best accommodate worldwide participants across multiple time zones. Participation is open to all Jewish teens, regardless of BBYO membership.

In addition to our Jewish enrichment sessions, we are also offering four song leading-focused “chugim,” where you can explore your love of music, songwriting, and performance in a small group setting. You can learn more about all of our enrichment options below.

JEI: Live the Story

Although we are locked in our homes and out of Israel, it doesn’t mean you can’t visit and learn tales from our national homeland. For the first time ever, join us for a chance to hear amazing Talmudic tales broadcast live from where they actually took place. Each session will include a virtual tour on location from renowned Israel tour guide, Jeff Schrager.

Session Leader: Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum

JEI: Modern Day Israel

We'll dive into the critical issues of modern day Israel, including an understanding of the Israeli political system and an exploration of its society and culture. We'll also learn about teen life, including what it's like to prepare for the IDF, youth movements in Israel, the education system, and more.

Session Leader: Nitzan Ben Shaya

JEI: Judaism in Pop Culture

Join us as we explore how Judaism is represented in movies, TV, social media, and music. Each day, we’ll dive into a different topic, how it is represented, and where in our traditional texts we can find those so-called “facts” that are being presented. The four topics include Passover, milestone moments, identity/stereotypes, and food.

Session Leader: Rachel Dingman

JEI: Ripped from the Headlines

Though we all share a rich history and tradition, we each view the world through our personal experiences. Let’s talk about what happens when we zoom in and explore news headlines and current events, including coronavirus and racism, the rise of anti-Semitism, and the U.S. presidential election, through a Jewish lens. Will our personal views conflict with how Judaism perceives and solves for a situation?

Session Leader: Liron Lipinsky

JEI: Identity, Identity: 2020 Vision

We will be exploring text and allowing it to inspire us to first envision, then anchor how we imagine our futures. Vision boarding is a powerful tool for manifesting the reality and future you hope for, and we will be using this artistic method alongside text study to craft powerful and creative visual compilations of values and inspiration.

Session Leader: Happie Hoffman

JEI: Manly Men

Let’s explore the world of masculinity through a Jewish lens. What does it mean to be, to know, and to interact with a young man in 2020? What role does the Aleph Zadik Aleph and BBYO have in shaping that identity? What can we learn from Jewish texts and traditions? Open to teens of any gender, this session will be a journey into eye-opening realizations.

Session Leader: Eric Hunker

JEI: Explore Israel as a Promise, People & Place

Jews have always been connected by common vision, shared values, and a complex relationship with geography. Throughout our time together, we'll explore our origin as a nation, our journey toward Statehood, and our future as a people through history, artifacts, current events, thought leaders, debate, and discussion.

Session Leader: Ian Kandel

JEI: This is America: Race, Justice, and Jewishness in the U.S. Today

Over the past weeks and months, we have witnessed our world turn upside down due to the overwhelming effects of COVID-19 and frequent reminders of the persistence of systemic racism. With so much uncertainty, how do teen leaders make sense of this moment and take steps towards a more just future? Join us as we tackle questions of race, justice, and Jewishness in contemporary America. We’ll explore all of your questions, analyze recent events through engaging with articles, pop culture, and music, and uncover the intersections between current events and the enduring values of Jewish tradition.

Session Leader: Kendell Pinkney

JEI: Jewish Renewal and Mindfulness with Shalom

Join in for a week of Jewish Renewal and dive deep into meditation, Jewish ritual, community building, mindfulness, and sound healing. Together, we will share what we know about our ancient past and develop ways in which we find meaning in them today. We will also practice mindfulness and learn what it means to be a community builder, merging past and present to make a brighter future.

Session Leader: Shalom Mayberg

CHUG: Six String Secrets

During this guitar chug, Eric will be sharing resources, lessons, tips, and tricks for guitarists of all levels. If you’re thinking about using this summer to step up your playing, this chug is for you!

Session Leader: Eric Hunker

CHUG: Strength and Dignity

This chug, open to teens who identify as female, will be a space to ground yourself, check-in, and explore what it means to be a powerful woman in 2020. Who are your role models in our tradition and in today’s world? What values are important for you as a modern woman? How do you hold yourself and others accountable?

Session Leader: Happie Hoffman

CHUG: Songwriting

Eric has been writing music in the secular and Jewish world for over a decade. This chug will be a place to learn new techniques and skills around songwriting as well as a workshop for songwriting solo and with new friends. Let’s make music together!

Session Leader: Eric Hunker

CHUG: BBYO Sings

This chug will explore musical leadership in BBYO. What does it mean to be a song leader and what does it mean to be a performer? We will dive into song leading philosophy, build our repertoire, and practice new skills. Our cohort will focus on building confidence, connecting with one another, and training to lead at future experiences.

Session Leader: Happie Hoffman
