Director's Note

Hello and welcome to the December edition of our monthly eNews, filled with exciting updates from across Toronto, Thornhill and Vaughan.

As the year comes to a close, we have much to celebrate:

  • Last month, two hundred teens participated in our ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ Pre-Screening for Hunger Awareness and Advocacy at SilverCity Richmond Hill Cinemas, collecting over 300 pounds of food for the Daily Bread Food Bank and raising over $400 for MAZON Canada, the national Jewish response to hunger.
  • Also last month, families from across Toronto, Thornhill and Vaughan gathered at the Goldhar Conference & Celebration Centre on the Lebovic Jewish Community Campus for BBYO Global Shabbat, an opportunity to celebrate Judaism’s most holy of days as a part of a movement, simultaneously, worldwide.
  • Just two weeks ago 120 teens joined us at our annual Tournies Convention at the Four Points Toronto Airport Hotel to connect with Jewish teens from across Toronto, Thornhill, Vaughan, Ottawa and Montreal; compete against other chapters in a wide variety of tournaments and events; and experience a meaningful and impactful teen-led Shabbat. Click here for a recap of the convention.

Already this year, participation is up an astounding 74% year-to-date! With many more meaningful experiences being planned for the coming months by teen leaders in six BBYO chapters across the city, we are on track to engage over 900 teens across the Greater Toronto Area by June.

Sending happy and healthy New Year wishes!

Share BBYO with an 8th Grade Teen

Hanukkah came early this year, but our BBYO Connect 8th graders still have a chance to get the ultimate gift. On January 1, 2014, 8th graders can officially become Alephs and B'nai B'rith Girls! By joining the Aleph Zadik Aleph (AZA) or the B'nai B'rith Girls (BBG), they can continue their journey with BBYO.

There's no need to wait, though! Teens can register now and become official members on January 1. What a great way to start their year!

JDC-BBYO Global Service Fellowship

The JDC-BBYO Global Service Fellowship is a year-long, paid professional opportunity for Jewish young professionals to directly engage with the world’s largest Jewish humanitarian aid organization, the JDC. Alongside local teen and community leaders, these Fellows create and develop peer-led Jewish programming for teens in their communities. Fellows additionally engage teens in International BBYO programming, such as leading delegations from their communities to BBYO International Convention and other global experiences. The Fellows enrich Jewish life overseas by capitalizing upon BBYO’s expertise in teen programming and leadership development and by facilitating meaningful connections between Jewish teens from around the world, creating a truly international Jewish teen movement.

This year, BBYO has five Fellows: Jonah Adams in Estonia, Kate Belza is Argentina, Hannah Goldstein in Latvia, Ariel Mortiz in Turkey and Ezra Moses in Ukraine. Click here to learn more about this exciting fellowship!
