Become a BBYO Chapter Advisor

BBYO empowers advisors to work in partnership with professional staff to supervise and guide AZA and BBG chapters. Advisors serve as positive Jewish role models by sharing observations with the youth, exploring challenges and seeking solutions with (not for) the teens, and encouraging BBYO members to strive for excellence. Advisors are there to advise, while the teens are there to lead the chapters. Advisors support BBYO teens, which are ultimately responsible for chapter programming with their peers. Under the guidance of advisor leadership, BBYO teens have the opportunity to grow into dynamic, engaged young Jewish leaders.

Becoming a BBYO advisor is an exciting and rewarding volunteer opportunity that will give you the chance to be part of the world’s leading Jewish teen movement, and make a direct impact in shaping the future of the Jewish community!

At this time, BBYO NoVA Council is looking for new advisors who can take responsibilities for BBYO chapters in our region. Please feel free to share this information with your contacts who may be interested.

East Coast Kallah 2014 – Here I am, Where are you?

Five years ago, BBYO members in four of the largest regions in the international order had a dream to come together for a weekend of Jewish learning and an uplifting Shabbat experience. That dream eventually became a reality when East Coast Kallah was born.

In addition to Jewish learning, East Coast Kallah teaches advocacy and philanthropy through inspiring guest speakers from prominent local and national non-profits. This year we’re marking the 5th anniversary of what has become one of the best BBYO weekends on the calendar. And, we’re doing it bigger and better with the inclusion of a mega-community Shabbat on Friday night, more speakers, and a brand new Saturday night program called BBYO Live -- a night of inspiration, globalization, and celebration. We’ll feature three headline speakers, live music and a dance party to celebrate our global philanthropic efforts through BBYO’s International Service Fund.

We’re also thrilled that US Representative Chris Van Hollen will be the keynote for the opening plenary to kick off the weekend. As we mark this milestone, we’re bringing East Coast Kallah home sweet home to where it all began in Bethesda, Maryland. Join us March 21-23, 2014 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. Click here to register.

JDC-BBYO Jewish Service Corps Fellow Spotlight

Ezra Moses - Ukraine
Recently, Ezra Moses, a second year JDC-BBYO Global Service Fellow in Ukraine, traveled to Poltava, Ukraine to speak at a seminar for Ukrainian youth directors about teen programs. Using the BBYO model and program partnerships, he explained how to empower teenagers to take on initiatives and local programs and about a partnership with BBYO. As a result, those directors who did not have teen programs declared that they would now start them, and those that did have teen programs wanted to empower their teenagers to become teen leaders.

In fact, the youth director from Sumy, a city of approximately 300,000 people, organized their first Teen Shabbat event. By that Sunday, they already had their first teen madrichim meeting.
