Director's Note

Hello BBYO DC Council! February has been an exciting month so far! Hundreds of DC Council members just returned from AZA BBG International Convention 2014 with thousands of other Alephs and B'nai B'rith Girls, alumni, advisors, staff, volunteers, community and business leaders, educators, clergy and philanthropists from 20 countries! To read about the experience, visit the blog!

In addition to the success of International Convention, much is happening right here in our own community! January and early February saw an amazing increase in DC Council membership, with AZA over 550 members, and BBG over 600 members.

In March, the Northern Region East will be playing host to a number of nearby regions for East Coast Kallah. Our very own Council Sh'licha, Bailey Dinman, is helping to coordinate the convention, which will be three action packed days of Jewish learning, community service and advocacy. For this and all else that's coming up on DC Council's calendar, we can't wait!

With love,

The DC Council Staff

BBYO + Birthright Israel = Best of Both Worlds

New eligibility rules allow teens under the age of 18 who travel to Israel with BBYO Passport to return for free after high school under the Birthright Israel gift. This important development means that BBYO teens no longer have to worry about disqualification from Birthright when they take part in a 3-6 week BBYO Summer Experience like ILSI or Israel Journey, which can be combined with travel to Europe and beyond!

More good news: BBYO has a record amount of need-based scholarship available for teens traveling to Israel this summer. The deadline to apply is February 24, 2014.

Advisor Spotlight

Every month, DC Council recognizes one of our many amazing advisors for the great work they do for their chapter and our community. In February, we would like to give a big shout out to Ahavah BBG's advisor, Lindsey Singer! Growing up in Boulder, Colorado, Lindsey was a founding member of Ahavah BBG 331. She held multiple board positions and was active on the regional and international level, experience that helps her a lot in her work with DC Council's Ahavah BBG. Although she's only been an advisor for a little over a year, Lindsey has made a big impact on the girls of Ahavah. Lindsey will be leaving us for a time for political campaign work, and we will all miss her greatly! Here's what one of Ahavah's leaders, Carly Shapiro, had to say about her advisor:

Ahavah is so lucky to have an advisor as organized, passionate, and attentive as Lindsey. She always ensures that events run smoothly and works hard to foster relationships with the girls of Ahavah, who look up to her very much. She always provides a different perspective to help members fully evaluate each situation and shares her experiences from when she was in an Ahavah BBG chapter in Colorado when she was younger. Ahavah appreciates all of her commutes from DC and will miss her when she leaves!

Thank you so much to Lindsey and all of our advisors for the great work you all do. We could not have such a successful program without you guys! For more information about becoming a BBYO advisor and other opportunities to volunteer with BBYO, click here.

Keep in mind that next month is Advisor Appreciation Month! If you would like to make a donation to BBYO DC Council in your teen's advisor's honor, please do so here!

Thank You FAN Leaders

BBYO’s new regional director of Community Engagement, Sara Gorfinkel, will be working with NRE Staff to deepen and strengthen adult support of BBYO’s important work on behalf of teens in our community. Sara would like to work with current and past parents, alumni who live in the area, chapter advisors, and community stakeholders, all of whom can bring important resources and energy to growing and, most importantly, sustaining BBYO in our community. Money raised locally stays locally through FAN (the Friends and Alumni Network). To get involved, please contact Sara Gorfinkel (sgorfinkel@bbyo.org).

Opportunities for Friends and Alumni at East Coast Kallah

NRE has the distinct honor of hosting BBYO’s 5th Annual East Coast Kallah on March 21-23.

The first opportunity for friends, alumni, and parents to experience the magic of BBYO will be a mega-community Shabbat experience at the Bethesda North Marriott Conference Center on Friday night (3/21), with a special Oneg afterwards hosted by the FAN Committee for current parents, friends and alumni. On Saturday night (3/22), there will be a special reception hosted by the DC Adult Board at 7:45-8:30 PM at the JCCGW before Havdallah and an impressive “BBYO Live” event. For more information or to RSVP, please email Sara Gorfinkel (sgorfinkel@bbyo.org).

This will be a fantastic way to get a taste of what’s going on with BBYO right here in your own backyard. For a list of speakers, educators, and guests confirmed so far, including Bruce Levenson, Dr. Rick Hodes, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, and more, please click here!
