Program Title: Adirah/Gottlieb Annual Beach Kickoff

Program Date: September 12th, 6:30-8:45

Take Away: Having fun while getting to know new people better while completing fun beach activities, and hopefully enticing prospects to join BBYO by giving them a glimpse of what BBGs/AZAs do at their respective meetings

Description: Teens with varying degrees of involvement (new members, prospects, non-active members, upperclassmen, etc) will come to a beach for a night of fun activities, including ice breakers, sand castle building, bobbing for apples, and eating pizza. If all goes as planned, then we should gain the memberships and commitments from younger and newer members who we have reached out to to join.

Outline:

• Have each person fill out a name tag with their name as they arrive

• Introduce top 4 and talk about bbyo (6:40-6:45)

• Start with Icebreaker (6:45-7:10)

  • Break up everyone by grade 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and have them meet the people they will be “growing” in bbyo with

  • Break Crayons in half, pass out each half, and have everybody find their match

  • Once they find their match they will be asked to discuss answers to questions asked by Liv and Nathan

  • After the questions are asked put groups together by color to mix grades

• Sand “Synagogue” Building, Liam (7:10-7:25)

  • Split the team up into two (depending on how many people there are)

  • Give each “team” a bucket and shovel

  • See who can build the best sand castle in 15 minutes

  • Winning team receives 15 points

• Tashlich, Liv (7:25-7:40)

  • Each person will be given a handful of pebbles to throw their sins into the water

  • The group leader of the group will prompt them with a stipulation to confessing a sin i.e. something you did in 3rd grade, something you did at hebrew school

  • Group leader will ask group members to share

• Trivia (7:40-7:55)

  • Make two groups and have them run up to hit Liv’s or Nathan’s hand

• Jello Jousting, Lidia and Nathan (7:55-8:10)

  • Everyone goes back to their pair they were paired up with in the crayon icebreaker

  • Everyone will get a spoon/spatula and jello

  • The goal of the game is to knock your opponents jello off their spoon

  • The first one’s jello to hit the ground loses

• After everyone will go to the pavilion (8:10-8:45)

  • There will be pizza and drinks for everyone to eat while socializing

    • Before eating, everyone will sign in to acquire contact info for everyone

  • During this there will be bobbing for apples

    • Symbolic of Rosh Hashanah

Introduction of Board members

  • Hi I’m Lidia Klein and I’m Liam Feltman we’re the presidents of Adirah BBG and Gottlieb AZA

  • BBYO is a place where we can come every week and be in a room with all of our best friends

  • In this community we all have one thing in common, we’re jewish and we are able to come together here and be jewish together

• Liv and Nathan will go second

  • Hi I’m Liv and I’m Nathan we’re the vice presidents of Adirah and Gottlieb

  • We plan all of the activities and meetings you guys will go to in the year to come

  • I love bbyo because, I live in Weston and I’m still able to come to fairfield and meet so many teens from other towns, that have since become some of my best friends

• Next, say what your favorite thing you did this summer was

• Then, everyone should tell their partner one way they can better themselves in this upcoming New Year on the Jewish calendar

• Free Question: Each partner will ask their counterpart a question of their own choosing i.e. favorite movie, favorite ice cream, best vacation spot, etc

-Red, Yellows, and Oranges are one group

-Blues, and greens are group two

-Purples and pinks are group three

-All other colors are group four

 *Once you get in the groups introduce your partners name and one new thing you learned about them*

 

Station 1: Liam

• Explain importance of synagogue

  • Talk about how synagogue is a place for worship and how different things go on in the synagogue i.e. hebrew school, b'nai mitzvahs, parties, etc

  • Explain rules (see Station 2 ) to the team and allow them to begin on the count of three

  • As they are building, check in and find out what they are doing. Talk to them as they build and make sure that all members are participating in the activity

Station 2:Liv

• Explain tashlich

  • Typically before sunset on the first day of Rosh Hashanah people gather around a body of water and throw their sins in

  • This may take form in a small piece of bread, but today we are using pebbles

  • These pebbles represent your sin that have been weighing you down

  • These sins can be from when you were in third grade, this past year, or yesterday

  • As you throw in each rock you “cast off your sin”

• After everyone throws in their sins Liv will ask if anyone would like to share, and why it is meaningful to them

 

Station 3: Liv and Nathan

• Explain trivia

  • Read questions from table

Station 4:

• Explain rules of Jello Jousting

  • Everyone will find the pair they were paired up with or the ice breaker

  • Everyone will be handed a spoon or spatula and jello to put on their spoon

  • The object of the game is to do anything to knock your opponents  jello off their spoon

  • The person who gets their jello knocked off first loses

 

Bobbing for Apples

• While everyone eats pizza and socializes you guys can also bob for apples

• The apples are symbolic of Rosh Hashanah, which just passed

• Apples are important to the holiday because they were believed to have ancient healing properties as well s holding a symbolic role in the Torah
