Event Details

To mark the thirteenth year of J-Serve Pittsburgh, an annual teen-planned day of service for 6th-12th graders throughout the greater Pittsburgh area, our theme is “Celebrating J-Serve Pittsburgh’s B’nai Mitzvah.” The ritual of b’nai mitzvah, when someone turns thirteen, is a significant marker on the road of becoming an adult and part of a community, with all the roles and responsibilities that go along with it. J-Serve is an opportunity for teens to take on some of the responsibility of being part of and giving back to the Pittsburgh community, living out values of tikkun olam (repairing the world), tzedek (justice), and g’milut chasadim (acts of loving kindness). This year, we are especially honored to be joined at J-Serve by a group of students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. As our communities continue to process the gun violence we have recently experienced, we are proud to come together in service, learning, and healing.

We are also excited to share that the opportunities at J-Serve are expanding this year! Along with traditional direct service projects, participants will also have the option to participate in one of two advocacy and community engagement experiences: one on gun violence, and one on immigrants and refugees. When you sign up, you can choose a classic J-Serve project like preparing meals for families in need with Family House or playing bingo with seniors at Weinberg Terrace, or learn more about advocacy and activism from fellow teens and local community leaders. J-Serve Pittsburgh is attended annually by more than 300 students, making it one of the largest J-Serve events in North America. Please join us for another inspiring year! Registration opens March 1.
