Farewell Hudson Valley Resort & Spa
Nassau Suffolk Region’s (NSR) beloved home for the past 12 years, the Hudson Valley Resort & Spa, closed just two months before a regional convention. This hotel was a home to many firsts. First times running programs and Shabbat services, first regional friends, and first-time Alephs and BBGs felt they belong in NSR.
Now, for the first time in 12 years, NSR cannot hold its regional convention there. The Hudson Valley Resort & Spa was moldy, had leaking walls and ceilings, had stained furniture and carpeting, and had a musty smell. Now I know what you’re probably thinking, “that’s disgusting, why would anyone be sad about it closing?” The truth is, those problems were what everyone loved most about the hotel.
During the elections for the 61st NSR BBG Regional Board, tiles fell from the ceiling due to leaks. Instead of being scared or disgusted, BBGs found this hilarious and view it as a favorite convention memory. In fact, the condition of the hotel made many members’ favorite memories possible and even allowed members to make new friends while bonding and laughing about them. It wasn't a big deal that the property wasn't perfect. What mattered was that we could be under the same roof together, even if that roof wasn't perfect.
Although there is truly no place like the Hudson Valley Resort & Spa, it is time for us to move forward. NSR’s upcoming convention theme will be “There’s No Place Like Home” because the region is preparing to make a new place our heart and home.
