The 2019 MLB Season: Year of the Dinger
Picture yourself at a baseball game. It is the last inning, and your favorite team needs a home run to win the game. At the last moment, a player from your team makes that winning home run. The ball goes flying over the fence, the players and fans go crazy.
If you are a baseball fan and love watching the ball go far, this was the season for you. Throughout the season, baseball teams from across the country hit a total of 6,776 home runs.
For instance, teams like the Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees hit 307 and 306 home runs, respectively.
According to an S.B. Nation article titled “10 Reasons 2019 was the Year of the Home Run”, 1.39 home runs were hit per game on average. This average is based on each team’s 162 game schedule.
The player that hit the most home runs this season was New York Mets’ rookie sensation, Pete Alonso, with over 50 home runs. Pete Alonso took home the National League Rookie of the Year unanimously.
While Alonso may have been the player that hit the most runs, one can not forget some of the contributing sluggers to the total number of home runs in 2019. Those players include Milwaukee Brewers’ Christian Yelich, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger.
This season was a record-breaking year for home runs. Next time you see a home run in action, take a moment to appreciate the dedication and hard work that baseball players put into their craft.
