Losing sucks. It feels like something you have worked so hard on, for so long slipped right through your hands. It can feel like your entire BBYO career is over. But I have something to tell you, it’s not. At my chapter board elections I lost my first choice of position and my drop down. I was heartbroken. I was mad. I was mad that I was mad! I knew I couldn’t be upset with my best friends for getting something I wanted, and I wanted to be supportive, but I was so sad. So much was running through my head. I remember crying in the back room with my assistant regional director. She told me something that changed my perspective on elections.

“It’s okay to feel whatever you’re feeling. While yes, this is how elections work, you can still be upset and grieve. It’s hard to lose something you worked hard for, while still being happy for someone else.”

I felt understood. I realized that elections are stressful and sometimes emotions run high. However, remembering what BBYO stands for, and by taking a step back, things begin to seem clearer. Five minutes later I was approached with another opportunity, to be nominated for Mekasheret. While I was still heartbroken, I jumped on the opportunity and I’m so grateful I did. Losing gave me the perseverance to continue. It made me stronger and less afraid. This term so far has been so amazing and I have been able to do so many cool things. So I’m here to tell you, it’s not the end. There will be so many more opportunities!
