My ILTC Experience
This Summer, I had the incredible opportunity of attending the International Leadership Training Conference at BBYO’s Perlman camp. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Each day, over 250 teens gathered at various programs and activities that developed friendships, taught leadership skills and deepened our Jewish identities. During my time at Perlman camp, I feel as though I grew and learned tons about myself and those around me. Going into camp, I thought it might be difficult because I had never attended a BBYO Summer experience before. But, after I settled, I quickly found that the experience exceeded my expectations. These are a few takeaways from camp that I continue to remember most:
- Shabbat
Shabbats at Perlman were like no others I had experienced before. Getting ready, taking pictures around the Perlman tree, services, special meals, and Havdalah were among my favorite experiences at camp. Each one was so joyful and meaningful, and it was so special to spend them with my friends. I am excited to celebrate Shabbat with friends at upcoming conventions and IC.
- Blueprint
Most days at ILTC, we had a Blueprint session that taught us important skills to utilize in BBYO. Surrounded by other teen leaders, we learned about each other's BBYO communities and other strategies to implement in our own regions. I learned lots of things that I would like to bring back to RMR.
- Camp Activities
While one of the big focuses of ILTC was on leadership, it was also a summer camp. Having never attended overnight camps before ILTC, I was nervous about what to expect. But, I loved each day doing Maccabiah, crafts, going to the pool and lake, playing sports, campfires, dancing, the 4th of July, and so much more. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to experience this.
- The People
Most of all, the people I met and friends I made had the biggest impact on me. Even though many of the friends I made live across the country or world, the connections I made in those 3 weeks have kept me in contact with many amazing people. I can’t wait to reunite with them at IC 2025!
Altogether, my IlTC experience was one that I will never forget. I learned so much about my Jewish identity, met lifelong friends, had an amazing camp experience, and discovered many things that I would like to include in my region. My advice: If you have the opportunity to attend a Summer program, especially at Perlman Camp, take it. You may be scared to try something new like I was, but the experience was so worth it. I promise you won’t regret going.
