How BBYO Built My Confidence
If you had told my shy, eighth-grade self that I was now Regional N’siah and felt comfortable and confident leading, I would have laughed in your face. When I began my BBYO journey, the thought of talking to someone new terrified me, and attending events was a daunting experience. It wasn’t just at BBYO; growing up, I had always been introverted and would rather stay in my comfort zone.
I began attending local and regional BBYO events more regularly and got the courage to run for board. Standing up in front of my chapter and giving my speech was frightening, but I did it anyway. The community I found in my chapter gave me the confidence and comfort I needed to speak freely. For the first time, I didn’t feel the pressure of performing perfectly; it was okay if I made a mistake!
A little later on, I decided to steer a regional convention. I was paired with another BBG who quickly became one of my best friends (and still is), and we got planning. We were given the opportunity to lead a program for the entire region, and again, I felt a sense of confidence when I stood at the front of the room. BBYO offers the unique experience of having peers who truly show you respect and are engaged in what you are saying. After this program, I was excited to dive deeper into more leadership opportunities.
That summer, I attended CLTC 2, where I was able to interact with inspiring teens from across the world. I arrived at CLTC knowing absolutely nobody and left with some of the closest friends I have ever made. The environment at CLTC was community-oriented and encouraged collaboration between teens of different backgrounds. I was able to grow alongside 100 other teens and my confidence in myself skyrocketed.
Fast-forward to two weeks ago, when I, along with the members of the three Florida Regional Boards, led an electric Florida Fall Convention. I found myself leading separates, numerous spirit-circles, and a successful Regional Business Meeting. While I was there, I took a moment to step back and look at how much I have grown. The transformation from the quietest girl in the room to the loudest in the middle of the spirit circle is groundbreaking, and I owe it all to this organization and the people in it. This environment, which pushes you headfirst into uncomfortable situations, seems terrifying at first, but then you feel the support of the people around you. Suddenly, you feel like you are home.
The immense change in my confidence is not just evident in a BBYO setting, but throughout every aspect of my life. My parents constantly tell me that when I got involved in BBYO, it was like a new person had appeared. I came out of my shell and am immensely grateful for the opportunities this has led me to. I feel comfortable standing up in front of my AP Research class and giving a presentation. I no longer feel the overwhelming pressure of perfectionism as I step onto the softball field. Over the past five years, BBYO has given me the opportunity to grow as a person and has fostered a new sense of confidence within me.

Parshat Behar-Bechukotai: Does BBYO Follow Commandments From G-d?
In the double portion of Behar-Bechukotai, God gave Moses commandments. Does BBYO fit into those commandments?
