A couple of weeks ago, the Wisconsin region held its annual fall convention. I had an incredible time at the convention, where I developed stronger friendships, learned more about myself, and had a blast hanging out with everyone in the region. One of my favorite activities at the convention was separates, a meaningful program where BBGs and AZAs typically split up and have their own thought-provoking program planned by the regional board.

For the BBG separates, there was a circle consisting of the regional board in the middle and the rest of the BBGs surrounding them. The lights were turned off, music was playing, and every BBG had a candle lit up in front of them. One by one, the R Board girls shared a personal experience that shaped their lives. Although I’ve known the R Board girls for a long time, I never knew the extent of the things they were going through. I thought all six of them were perfect, considering how put-together, confident, and inspiring they are at every event. I had previously been afraid and worried to talk to some of these girls because I was nervous that they would judge me or think I was weird. But now, after hearing their stories, I have realized that they are only human too. Nobody's life is perfect, and that is why it is so important for us to be there for one another to help each other through challenging times.

After the R Board spoke, the rest of the BBGs took turns sharing their personal experiences. When I spoke my truth, every girl in the room listened and truly heard what I had to say. It was a powerful feeling, knowing that there are people who understand what I'm going through. It was almost as if a weight was lifted off my shoulders, allowing me a chance to finally breathe.

Separates reminded me how important BBYO is in my life and how it has impacted me. The organization has given me a community, a sisterhood, and a family. I wouldn’t change what BBYO has given to me for the world.

Now more than ever, it is important that as BBGs we continue to be there for each other, because at the end of the day, what truly matters are the BBG girls you sat next to at separates, with an everlasting candle glowing between you.
