One of the most exciting things you will hopefully experience during your time in BBYO is attending a convention! Whether it is regional or international, there are some important things you need to do to ensure the convention is as fun as possible. I have attended 5 regional conventions and 2 international conventions and have learned a lot about preparing and decompressing, both of which are important for BBYO conventions. I will focus on the before, during, and after the convention to ensure that you maximize your experience. ?

Before convention:

The first and most important tip is to know when a convention is coming. I know this sounds obvious, but the truth is, conventions can sneak up on you when you're busy, and you want to make sure you have enough time to prepare. You will also want to get as much sleep as you can before the convention, because you probably won't sleep much while you are there.

Now that you remember your convention is coming soon, make a checklist of what you will need. Obviously, there are the essentials like toiletries, socks, and underwear, but I want to focus on what you can do to make the convention fun and memorable. I recommend looking at the theme of your convention to see if you have any on-brand outfits. Also, it is a good idea to check your region's social media to see if there are any dedicated theme days. Conventions are supposed to be fun and shticky, so this is the space for you to dress up in that costume you have and go all in on whatever makes you happy. BBYO is meant to be a space where you can showcase your personal, chapter, or regional identity, and dressing up is a great way to do so.

Make sure you pack snacks! You may want these for your long flight or bus ride to the conventions, as well as on the way home afterwards. This one is super important because although convention food is “so amazing,” you may still find yourself hungry. I also know that I tend to stay up late in MY OWN ROOM at convention with friends whom I am rooming with, and candy and snacks are always welcome.

Another important tip is to let your teachers know you will miss class on Friday. This allows you to get any work that you need to complete beforehand and to make sure your teachers don't get mad. Also, tell them that you will not be back until Sunday afternoon/night, which can make it hard to complete homework before school on Monday.

During Convention:

There is only one thing that you need to worry about during convention: having as much fun as possible! This is the most magical experience in BBYO, and you want to make memories that you will remember for the rest of your life. Make sure you are putting yourself out there: go introduce yourself to somebody you don’t know, join an interesting conversation, and take part in all the rituals and experiences conventions have to offer. Also, make sure you are having fun both during scheduled programming and during chofesh (free time).

After Convention:

Take care of yourself and make sure you get a lot of sleep. I always give the convention all the energy I have, and sometimes this leaves me coming home sick and exhausted. Make sure you take care of yourself and get rest after the convention so you don’t cut into your regular schedule.

Conventions are one of the most fun and exciting things that BBYO has to offer, and now you will be a little bit better prepared for your next adventure!
