Let me start by saying that if you can go on a summer program, do it. From what my friends have told me, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is unlike any other. You make friends from all over the order, learn to appreciate BBYO in a new way, and gain a special appreciation for your Jewish heritage.

However, let's face it. We’re Jewish, so many of us go to sleepaway camp. Camp takes up a lot of time and money, and most of us don’t want to miss a summer, especially not when we’re so close to aging out. I’m an example of this. I’ve been going to camp for years, and I’m working this summer as a counselor for the first time. But, there’s always a part of me that questions whether that’s the right choice. I hear about summer programs all the time from BBYO friends, and I want to experience that so badly. The meaningful Shabbats spent under the Perlman tree, the new connections with BBGs and AZAs from other regions, and everything else that goes along with it.

Even with this strong desire to experience a BBYO summer camp, I can’t bring myself to leave the camp I’ve known for so long. The title of this article asks whether or not BBYO is worth it if it’s not a part of your summers. The short answer is absolutely, 100%, undoubtedly yes. Even without being able to spend my summers embracing my love for BBYO, my school years have become a million times better because I’m in BBYO.

From attending chapter programs to being a council board member, I’ve gained my truest and most meaningful friendships from this organization. I found Jewish friends for the first time in my life, and my Jewish identity has been strengthened in a way I didn’t even know was possible. Because of my time in BBYO (even without the summer), I am a more confident leader, more supportive friend, and more self-assured individual.

So, no matter what your summers look like, BBYO is worth it any time of the year.
