Dynamic Relationships: The Friend You Didn’t Know You Needed
Just when you think your social circle is complete and you are entirely content with your life, an unexpected connection at a BBYO event can completely rewrite your trajectory. True friendship in BBYO has a magnetic, transformative power. The right people, whether a sister in BBG, a brother in AZA, or a friend met across the order, can pull out dormant parts of your personality, revealing hidden leadership strengths and summoning a curiosity you never knew you possessed. These dynamic, shifting relationships expand the boundaries of who you are; reshaping your interests, redefining what you are drawn to, and reminding us that our personal evolution is deeply tied to the people we allow into our orbit.
Life and movement in BBYO are defined by an endless ebb and flow of ICs, summer programs, chapter meetings, conventions, and changing board terms. The natural rhythm of our movement requires a constant exchange of energy, experience, and connection, just like the ocean tides. When we talk about the friend you didn’t know you needed, it highlights a deeper truth: we often don’t realize how much room we still have to grow. There is an unspoken anxiety that making new friends at a regional convention somehow threatens our chapter bonds, or dilutes the time we share with our outside friends. But a BBYO connection isn’t an all-or-nothing game. BBYO isn’t a rigid play with a fixed script and a permanent cast; it is an ever-evolving movement where the ensemble naturally shifts, flows, and adapts as members age out and new ones are inducted. There are no fixed roles to audition for, and no capacity limits on our empathy.
Our social circuits are designed to be elastic, flexing with the changing currents of our teenage years. They must expand outwardly across our chapters, regions, and International Order if we ever hope to expand inwardly. While loyalty to your day-one BBYO friends is beautiful, clinging exclusively to the familiar traps us in a static bubble, arresting our maturity and stunting our personal growth. Relationships are not meant to be static monuments; they are fluid, living dynamics that mirror the natural cycles of change. New bonds don't erase the past, they enrich your future, blending seamlessly into the tapestry of who we are becoming. As the classic Joseph Parry quote reminds us, "Make new friends, but keep the old; those are silver, these are gold." By leaning into the ebb and flow of life and opening your circle, you aren't just adding names to a contact list, you are opening the door to the next phase of your BBYO journey while simultaneously leading someone else into theirs. Meeting the friends you didn’t know you needed.
