About March of the Living

March of the Living is more than a journey through history. It's an opportunity to honor the past, connect with Jewish teens from around the world, and explore what it means to carry our shared history forward. Through visits to historic Jewish neighborhoods, synagogues, Holocaust memorials, and sites of remembrance across Poland, participants will discover the richness of Jewish life that once flourished throughout the country while confronting the devastating impact of the Holocaust.

At the heart of the experience is the March of the Living itself, when thousands of Jewish teens and travelers come together on Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) to walk the three kilometers from Auschwitz to Birkenau. Throughout the journey, teens will have opportunities for meaningful conversations, shared reflection, and Jewish connection as they honor those who came before us. Together, we'll remember the lives that were lost, celebrate the strength and resilience of the Jewish people, and consider our responsibility to preserve these stories for future generations.

Kraków, Poland (2 Days)

Step into centuries of Jewish history as you walk through Kazimierz, Kraków's historic Jewish Quarter. Once home to one of Europe's most vibrant Jewish communities, this neighborhood offers a window into generations of Jewish culture, faith, and tradition. Explore historic synagogues, including the Remuh, Old, Tempel, and Isaac Synagogues, and visit the old Jewish cemetery to learn about the people who helped shape Jewish life in Kraków. Spend time in the city's historic Old Town Market Square and view Wawel Castle, reminders of the rich history of this region.

Trace the history of the Holocaust through visits to the former Kraków Ghetto and the site of the Płaszów labor camp, and view the exterior of Oskar Schindler's Factory. Through these experiences, learn about the lives of Kraków's Jewish residents during the Nazi occupation and the importance of preserving their stories.

On Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), join thousands of Jewish teens and travelers from around the world for the March of the Living. Visit Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau, where you'll confront the history of the Holocaust and honor those who were murdered there. Walk the three kilometers from Auschwitz to Birkenau in a powerful act of remembrance and solidarity, followed by the official Yom HaShoah ceremony. Surrounded by fellow Jews from across the globe, this experience offers an opportunity to stand together, reflect on our shared history, and reaffirm our commitment to carrying these stories forward.

Rzeszów, Poland (1 Day)

Beyond Poland's major cities, the Galicia countryside holds the stories of generations of Jewish families, scholars, and thriving communities. Travel through this historic region to learn about the lives and traditions of those who once called it home, and the lasting impact of the Holocaust on Jewish communities across southern Poland.

Pause for a solemn visit to the Zbylitowska Góra forest memorial, honoring the Jewish victims murdered and buried there during the Holocaust. In the nearby town of Łańcut, visit the historic castle and synagogue, which offer another glimpse into the region's cultural and Jewish heritage. These experiences provide time to reflect on the communities that once flourished throughout Poland and the responsibility we share to preserve their memory.

Lublin, Poland (1 Day)

Once an important center of Jewish scholarship and religious life, Lublin holds a remarkable place in the history of Polish Jewry. At the historic Chachmei Lublin Yeshiva, learn about the generations of Jewish students and scholars who gathered here to study, teach, and strengthen Jewish traditions. Gain a deeper understanding of the city's contributions to Jewish education and the devastating impact of the Holocaust on this once-thriving community.

At Majdanek, a former Nazi concentration and extermination camp, confront the realities of the Holocaust and honor those who suffered and were murdered there. Through guided exploration and time for reflection, deepen your understanding of the history preserved at this site and the importance of sharing these stories with future generations.

Warsaw, Poland (2 Days)

Warsaw's Jewish history tells a story of vibrant communities, devastating loss, and extraordinary courage. Visit the Okopowa Jewish Cemetery and Umschlagplatz, where Jewish residents of the Warsaw Ghetto were assembled before deportation to Nazi death camps. At the Treblinka memorial, honor the hundreds of thousands of Jews murdered there and reflect on the scale of the Holocaust in occupied Poland.

Follow the story of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising as you walk along the Route of Heroes and visit the Rapoport Memorial, honoring the Jewish resistance fighters who stood against the Nazis. At POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, learn about centuries of Jewish life in Poland, from thriving communities and cultural traditions to the enduring legacy of Polish Jewry.

Share Shabbat with your group in Warsaw, with opportunities to attend services at historic or contemporary Jewish congregations, including the Nożyk Synagogue or Beit Warszawa. Mark the end of Shabbat with Havdalah and spend time exploring Warsaw's historic Old Town. As the journey comes to a close, reflect together on the people, places, and stories you've encountered, the friendships you've built, and what it means to carry the memory and legacy of Jewish communities into the future.
