Battles and Blessings: How Challenges Shape Our Identity
The parshiot of Chukat and Balak tell a powerful story about identity, resilience, and the challenges that shape who we become.
In Chukat, B'nai Yisrael face one of the most difficult periods of their journey through the desert. Miriam and Aaron pass away, the people struggle with fear and uncertainty, and Moshe makes the mistake that will prevent him from entering the Promised Land. Yet alongside these personal and communal struggles, the Torah describes a series of important battles.
The Israelites ask permission to pass peacefully through the land of Edom, but their request is denied. Soon afterward, they face the Canaanite king Arad, and later they wage war against Sichon, king of the Amorites, and Og, king of Bashan. These victories are much more than military successes. They mark a turning point for a new generation of Israelites preparing to enter the Land of Israel. Unlike their parents, who often responded to challenges with fear, this generation learns to confront obstacles head-on.
These wars represent something many of us experience today. We may not fight physical battles, but we all face challenges that test us: pressure from school, uncertainty about the future, struggles with self-confidence, or moments when we feel lost. Like B'nai Yisrael, we often wish we could avoid these difficulties altogether. Yet growth usually comes when we face them rather than run from them.
Then we arrive at Balak, where a different kind of battle takes place.
Balak, the king of Moab, fears the Israelites and hires Bilaam to curse them. This time, there are no armies and no weapons. The battle is fought through words. But every time Bilaam attempts to curse the Jewish people, God transforms those curses into blessings.
One of those blessings includes the famous words:
"Mah Tovu Ohalecha Yaakov, Mishkenotecha Yisrael" — “How goodly are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places, O Israel.”
The message is timeless. Sometimes our greatest struggle is not against obstacles in front of us, but against the labels, criticism, and expectations placed upon us by others. We live in a world where social media, peer pressure, and public opinion can strongly influence how we see ourselves. Bilaam's story reminds us that our identity is not determined by what others say about us.
Together, Chukat and Balak teach two essential lessons:
-
The wars of Chukat teach us that challenges are often necessary for growth.
-
The blessings of Balak teach us that our worth comes from within, not from the opinions of others.
The Jewish people reached the edge of the Promised Land not because their journey was easy, but because they kept moving forward despite every setback. They overcame physical battles, emotional struggles, and spiritual challenges. And when others tried to define them negatively, their true strengths shined through.
As Jewish teens, we face our own battles every day. Some are visible, and some are hidden. But these parshiot remind us that every challenge has the potential to make us stronger, and every negative voice can be transformed into an opportunity to discover our true value.
The battles we fight and the blessings we receive are both part of the journey that shapes who we are.
Shabbat Shalom,
